News from Siglufjörður

Þann 29. maí fórum við í fuglaskoðun. Við fórum á bíl fram á fjörð og keyrðum um. Við fórum fyrst á uppfyllinguna þar sem er æðarvarp, þar lá kolla á hreiðri rétt við veginn. Hún hreyfði sig ekki þótt að við stoppuðum rétt við hana og virtum hana fyrir okkur. Í ferðinni sáum við um 10 jaðrakana, enginn var merktur.

On the 29th of May we went birdwatching here in Siglufjörður. There are 10 kids in fourth grade in the school in Siglufjörður. We went by car and drove around. First we went to a place were eiders are laying. And there we saw one very close to the road. It did not move although the car stopped just by it. We saw about 10 godwits on the trip, but not one of them was ringed.

Looking for Godwits.

We found one!

Birna's Jaðrakan (Godwit)

(On the 22nd of May one ringed bird was found dead on the road here. It had been hit by a car. It was the bird LN-WX and it was ringed in Siglufjörður 2009 and “adopted” by Helena Margrét last year, she is in the 6th class now. I found the bird, but was in such a hurry that I didn´t think of taking it in my car, but when I came back to it 2 hours later it was gone, only two – or three feathers left where I had put it.)
